Four Benefits of Omega 3 Fish Oil for Black Men
What can Omega 3 Fish oil do for my body?
Omega 3 fish oils contain two fatty acids (DHA and EPA) that may help prevent and manage heart diseases, prevent cancer, and help to develop muscle mass. Most people get their omega 3 fatty acids from fatty, cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, herring sardines, trout, and tuna or from shellfish like mussels, oysters, and crabs or from nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.
We know that more Black men have high blood pressure than White men. Approximately 70% of Black men are overweight or obese. Black men develop heart disease 10 years earlier than White men. Therefore, Omega 3 fish oil may help to
1. Prevent heart disease such as heart attack, and stroke.
2. Reduce high blood pressure
3. Significantly reduce high triglycerides and cholesterol levels while improving high density lipoprotein, the “good” cholesterol.
4. Diminish arthritic pain, stiffness, and tenderness of inflamed joints.
Just like there are benefits of foods or drugs there are side effects as well. Side effects of eating fish oil foods are:
1. Fishy taste and odor of the mouth
2. Heartburn, nausea, or loose stools
If you don’t like fish, you can take a fish oil supplement. Limit your fish oil supplement dose to no more than three (3) grams per day. The American Heart Association recommends the use of fish oils to help your heart’s performance as long as you keep your dosage under 3 grams per day, suggesting an amount roughly between 0.5 to 1.8 grams per day. Higher doses can increase the risk of bleeding and stroke.
Be careful if taking medications that increase your risk of bleeding or interact with the fish oil supplement like
1. Anticoagulants, antiplatelets, aspirin.
2. Herbs and supplements
3. Blood pressure medications
4. Contraceptives (women)
6. 6. Vitamin E
Finally, it is always a good idea to see your doctor before taking over-the-counter supplements, especially if you are taking prescribed medications or have pre-existing diseases. With all these facts, there is no doubt that the regular and responsible use of Omega 3 fish oils or supplements can be of great benefit to your health.
